Today has started the first round of LOST HIGHWAY seminars.
The event has been inaugurated by a welcoming message by the chair of the meeting Michelangelo Vasta. Giovanni Federico, the principal investigator of the PRIN, has then illustrated to the audience the history of this project, its structure, and the main goals. The meeting has continued with the presentation of two new research papers.
Topics:
human capital accumulation, education, school reform

In the first session, Gabriele Cappelli, Leonardo Ridolfi, and Michelangelo Vasta (USiena) have shown the results of their research about Italy’s 1962 Middle School reform “Pupils today, astronauts tomorrow? The impact of Italy’s 1962 school Reform on human capital accumulation.” Their paper has been discussed by Carlo Ciccarelli (URoma2).
In the second session, Marco Martinez (SSSA) has presented his work on the origins of Italy’s North-South literacy divide entitled ‘New estimates on Italian literacy rates using a sample of marriage signatures, 1815’ with Giovanni Vecchi (URoma2) as discussant.
Thanks to the thoughtful comments and suggestions of discussants and participants a lively debate has unfolded.
